Wolves in Portugal
This picture shows a Canis lupus signatus - an Iberian wolf, of which today there are only around 300 in Northern Porugal
If you are a wildlife enthusiast you will be keen to visit ‘Wolves in Portugal’ !
Situated in 17 hectares of secluded woodland countryside about an hour and a half from Casa Rosden, near to Mafra, is the Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre (CRLI ). The Centre is run by volunteers together with Lisbon University and cares for rescued injured wolves and provides a safe enviroment for recovery and study of these almost extinct species.
Until the 1900 the wolves inhabited parts of the Iberian peninsular, but in the 1950’s became almost extinct in Portugal following the the extermination policies of the government. Today wolf hunting is banned in Portugal
Visits to the centre must be booked in advance, but with prior notice an English speaking guide will be happy toy show you around the centre.
