Sintra
Sintra, another UNESCO world heritage site is a truly ’magical place’ and is often described by many people as a ‘romantic getaway’
Said by ‘Hans Christian Anderson to be the ‘most beautiful place in Portugal and by Lord Byron to be ‘Glorious Eden’, Sintra, a summer home of the Royal family of Portugal since the 15th Century, is just an hour and forty minutes from Casa Rosden.
The old town of Sintra which sits on a granite slope and is dominated by the Palácio Nacional, is best visited by horse drawn carriage.
The exotically decorated and Romantic Monserrate Palace is located just 4kms from the old quarter. Built in 1858 it is a magnificant building surrounded by vast botanical gardens.
By contrast the Seteais Palace originally built in the last quarter of the 18th century is a dignified neo classical building and today a 5 star hotel!.
The Moorish Castle constructed by the Moors in the 8th Century is situated on two peaks of the Serra de Sintra and has stunning panoramic views form the castle walls.
Pena Palace dates back to 1839 and is known as one of the ‘7 Wonders of Portugal’. The Palace, situated high on a hill is once of the most significant examples of regal architecture and was used a Royal residence of Portugal until 1910.
