Portugal Day
Portugal Day ( Dia de Portugal ) is celebrated on 10th June and is a National Holiday, in honour of Portugal’s greatest poet ‘Luís Vaz de Camões’, who died in 1580. Little is known about his life, other than he studied in Coimbra, fought in India, losing an eye and, after his return to Lisbon, that he began to frequent the Royal Palace, although he lived a very poor existance, from a very meagre pension that was granted by the king.
His great talents as a writer were not recognised during his lifetime, so It was not until after his death, that his poetry, and in particular The ‘Lusiads’ ( Os Lusiads ) -a collection of his works, first published in 1572, began to be seen as valuable and today his reputation is established as one of the greatest literary figures in Portuguese history.
