Casa Rosden holiday hideaway in central Portugal

Motorway Tolls

Tolls are now charged on  ’previously free motorways’ in Central & North of Portugal as well as the Algarve.

Motorways charged in the 2nd phase of tolls are the A22 in the Algarve, the A23 which runs from Torres Novas to Guarda , the A24 from Viseu to Chaves and the A25  from Vilar Formoso to Aveiro

The 1st phase of new system of charging tolls, started  at the end of last year, and the implementation of the 2nd phase, which had been scheduled for April 2011, was implemented on 8th December 2011.

Please note : The IC3 from the junction with the A23 to the Santa Cita exit, which is very close to Casa Rosden has been renamed the A13 and toll charges have been in place on this road since 1st November 2011.

The following information is quoted from the Portuguese News in English  and will be of special interest to you, as a tourist visiting  Portugal.

”Foreign-registered cars will be allowed to hire transponders, paying a deposit of €27 and a minimum pre-payment of €50 that will be debited to the account associated with the transponder.

Upon returning the transponder, the owner of the foreign-registered vehicle will be debited or credited in accordance with the number of occasions toll roads had been used. Car rentals will operate in a similar manner.

Via Verde has also launched a ‘Via Verde Visitor’ scheme so vehicles belonging to tourists and visitors can also use the country’s toll roads.

Visitors can rent a tag (transponder) from any Via Verde store for up to 90 days, so long as they have a valid credit or debit card.

Drivers will be asked to leave a down payment and pay six euros for the first week, over and above their toll charges. Longer rentals will reportedly cost just one and a half euros a week”

Car Hire Companies should now be aware of these changes,so please remember to ask when booking, as to what will be necessary for your trip.
