Casa Rosden holiday hideaway in central Portugal

Ourém Castle

Just 45 minutes from Casa Rosden, the remains of the 15th Century Castle of Ourém, dominates the medieval town and is located just 10km from the holy shrine of Fátima in Central Portugal. Legend says that the town’s name is derived from a Moorish girl called Fátima and hence, the castle is sometimes referred to as Fátima Castle.

Fátima was captured by a  Christian Knight Gonçalo Hermigues who took her to a small village in the Serra de Aire hills. The princess fell in love and married the knight, and converted to Christianity, taking name of Oureana.  The princess received a gift of the town known today as Ourém, which she named after her own name.

The Castle is also known as the “Castle of the Queen of the World” because the light that transported ‘Our Lady’ to appear to the children at Fatima in 1917, was said to be seen directly above the castle. In 1967, Pope Paul VI confirmed this Bishop John Venancio of Leiria, when he flew over the castle on his way to Fátima for the 50th Anniversary Celebrations.
