Castelo Do Bode lake
Castelo do Bode lake is the largest and one of the most beautiful in Portugal. Surrounded by Eucalyptus and Pine forests, it stretches for over 60kms from the outskirts of Cernache do Bomjardim, to Tomar and follows the path of the River Zezêre. In fact it is one of the main approach routes to Lisbon for Aircraft, flying over the valley of the Zêzere from the Mountains of the ‘Serra da Estrela’.
The purpose of the ‘Castelo do Bode Dam’ which was constructed between 1945 and 1951 was to hold back the bulk of the waters from the Mountains for the production of electric energy. Only later did this gigantic body of water suppy a large part of the capital Lisbon with it’s water. This impressive structure well worth seeing and is just 5 minutes drive from Casa Rosden .
The lake is a popular attraction with tourists and locals alike and there are many River Beaches, including the popular ‘Aldeia do Mato’ just 15 minutes away, which was awarded a ‘blue flag’ and given the distinction of ‘quality of gold’ both in 2009. Here you can swim safely and hire our canoes.
The stunning village of Dornes is situated on the shores of Castelo do Bode lake and is just 40mins drive from Casa Rosden
The lake is also popular with fishermen, with an array of fish to be had, including bass and carp.
Indeed, whether your passion is swimming, fishing, or canoeing, Castelo Do Bode lake has something to offer everyone and is well worth a visit during your stay here at Casa Rosden.
