Castelo de Almourol
A few kilometres west of Constância stands the much-photographed Castle of Almourol. Occupying an island in the middle of the River Tagus, it was a Roman fortress rebuilt in 1171 by Gualdim Pais, Grand Master of the Templars and builder of Tomar. The castle is also said to be haunted on moonlit nights by the ghost of a Moorish prince who died for the love of his captor’s daughter.
Almourol Castle was given to the Templar Knights, who then became responsible for the defence of the ancient capital, Coimbra. The knights went about rebuilding the castle, and many of its original architectural characteristics are still visible today. It was completed in 1171, just two years after the construction of the castle at Tomar. These two castles had several features which were common to both castles. Each castle also had a jail tower. The tower at Almourol castle has been significantly modified down through the centuries and consisted of three levels.
When The Order of the Templar Knights faded into history, the importance of Almourol declined and it was eventually forgotten. In the 19th century, Almourol was rediscovered and attempts were made to rekindle the idealism of the middle ages. Many of the original structures were unfortunately destroyed at this time, without any thought to it’s true heritage.
Almourol Castle is found on the Rio Tejo Islet in the municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha and may be visited free of charge. It is approximately 21 km from Casa Rosden and less than half an hour away by car. There is free car parking and a Bar/café for refreshments. Visitors only pay for the boat trip, to reach the front of the castle.
