Os Poços, St António da Neve, Castanheira de Pera

Beside the Capela de Santo António da Neve, there are 3 stone houses (poços) that were used many years ago to store ice. In the early years, ‘Castanheira de Pera’ transported  the ice from the mountains of Lousã to Lisbon. 7 stone houses were built to store & protect the ice from the sun. The ice was cut into large blocks, placed on horse drawn carts & taken to Constância, where it was taken by boats on the River Tejo to Lisbon. Today, only 3 of the ´ice houses´ remain.
