Alcobaça Monastery
Alcobaça Monastry, just and hour and twenty minutes from Casa Rosden, was founded by King Alfonso 1 the first Portuguese King in 1153. It is the largest church in Portugal and the first to adopt the Gothic Style.
Alcobaça Monastry was given World Heritage status in 1989 firstly because of it’s size…….but also ”the purity of it’s architectural style, the beauty of the materials and the care with which it was built to make this a masterpiece of Cistercian Gothic Art”
The interior is 106m in length, the side Aisles are 20 m high and the large Gothic windows flood the building with natural light.
In the 17th and 18th centuries the Monastry was remodelled in ‘Baroque’ style and only the main doorway and Rose window remained unchanged. Inside the monastery are the tombs of King Pedro of Portugal and his murdered love ‘Ines de Castro’.
