An enchanting forest, within a walled National park of over 700 species of trees from all over the world, Buçaco or Bussaco as it is also known, is located northeast of Coimbra on the way to Viseu, and approximately and hour and a half from Casa Rosden.
The forest is Portugal’s most famous Woodland and amongst the 250 acres, you with find rare birds, exoctic plants, waterfalls, pathways, lakes and gardens. The Benedictine monks first established a retreat here in the Buçaco forest as early as the 6th Century, building many chapels.
In the middle of the woodland stands the Manueline Gothic Palace of Bussaco, completed in 1907, only 3 years before the declaration of the Republic and end of the monarchy, on the site of the former monks old Monastry, as a summer home for the Portuguese Royal family.
Today Buçaco Palace retains it’s original splendour as an elegant luxurious 60 Bedroom Hotel with antique furniture and many of the original paintings. The famous Buçaco wines are available exclusively from here.
